Fourteen Years. Thousands of Opinions.
14 Years, Hundreds of Brides, and Just When I Think I've Seen It All…
Just about Fourteen years.
FOURTEEN YEARS of wedding gowns, veils, lace, sparkle, happy tears, and the occasional moment that makes me wonder if I should have written a book instead of owning a bridal shop! LOL!
You would think that after 14 years in the bridal business, absolutely nothing could surprise me anymore.
Oh, how wrong you would be!
Just when I think I've seen it all, something NEW happens. Something unexpected. Something hilarious. And occasionally, something downright ALARMING!
Trust me, you cannot make some of this stuff up!
Oh, the Things I've Seen!
I've witnessed the pure joy of a bride finding THE dress. That magical moment when she looks in the mirror, her face lights up, and everyone in the room just knows.
I've seen the tears. Happy tears, nervous tears, sentimental tears, and sometimes tears that have absolutely nothing to do with the dress!
I've watched mothers cry before their daughters even step out of the dressing room.
I've witnessed champagne toasts, squeals of excitement, spontaneous hugs, and enough happy dancing to qualify my boutique as a reception venue.
And then…
There's the other times...
I've seen bridesmaids disagree over necklines, sisters argue over silhouettes, and best friends who suddenly become self-appointed fashion experts.
I've watched a perfectly peaceful appointment turn into a full-blown debate over whether a dress is romantic, modern, classic, boho, or, my personal favorite, "just not HER."
I've heard the famous words:
"Well, I wouldn't wear it."
And somewhere in my head, a tiny voice whispers…
"Good thing you're not the bride!"
And Let's Not Forget the Moms!
Oh, the mothers.
The beautiful, emotional mothers who remember their daughters playing dress-up just yesterday and now find themselves watching them try on wedding gowns.
They are sometimes the most complimentary and other times the most critical.
And then there are the mothers-in-law. Now, don't get me wrong. I've met some absolutely WONDERFUL mothers-in-law over the years. 99% are fabulous! And I, as one myself, know there is a time and a place for unwarranted criticism. NEVER. :)
But in the shop every once in a while, a little comment slips out.
A raised eyebrow.
A carefully delivered opinion.
A sentence that begins with…
"Well, in MY day…" or "I don't think my Johnny would like that, but..." Ohhhhhhh little Johnny's mom.
And suddenly, I'm standing there holding a veil, smiling politely, and wondering whether I should offer everyone a cup of coffee or a referee's whistle!
I've Learned a Thing or Two in 14 Years
I've learned that the most expensive dress isn't always the prettiest.
That the gown a bride swears she would NEVER wear sometimes becomes the one she can't imagine getting married without.
That too many opinions can turn a simple decision into a complicated one.
And that sometimes the quietest bride in the room has the strongest opinion of all.
But most importantly, I've learned something that hasn't changed in all these years.
It's not about the dress. Well… okay, it's a LITTLE about the dress!
It's about the woman wearing it.
It's about her confidence, her happiness, and that beautiful smile when she finally sees herself as a bride.
And in the End…
Despite the opinions, the tears, the occasional family drama, the unexpected surprises, and those moments that leave me shaking my head long after everyone has gone home…
There's one thing that makes every single day worth it.
A HAPPY BRIDE.
A bride who walks out of Cherished Bridals with the biggest smile on her face, knowing she found the dress of her dreams.
And if she found it at an incredible price!
Well, that's just the icing on the wedding cake!
Fourteen years later, I still love what I do.
I love the brides. I love the love stories. I love the laughter. And yes, believe it or not, I even love some of the craziness!
Because every bride brings a new story through my door.
And just when I think I've seen it all…
Oh, honey. Here comes another bride!
Stay tuned.
My next blog post is titled "Alice's Final Wish".
With love, laughter, and a little bridal-shop survival humor,
Barbara
